Learning Village

Education

The Learning Village provides first through eighth grade education to empower our youth with knowledge and broaden each student’s horizon of opportunity.

We serve a community outside of Addis  Ababa that faces great change as Ethiopia’s capital city expands.  Education is a vital tool for adapting to a changing society, transcending poverty and creating a thriving community.

Currently, we provide 1st through 8th grade education.  This year we plan to open a pre-school program to prepare the youngest members of our community to enter grade school.  Our goal is to offer classes to at least the 10th grade level, so that our graduates will be in a position to choose from a variety of vocational training programs (offered at the Learning Village and elsewhere) or college education, and to pursue a career appropriate to the student’s abilities and interests.

Giving priority to primary education supports the development of other sectors:

  • The effectiveness of investments in health and sanitation depends on basic knowledge about the importance of hygiene and self-care.
  • Education helps harness the productivity of hard-working individuals because knowledge and learned skills make it possible for businesses, factories, hospitals and farms to work more efficiently.
  • A well-educated population is crucial for taking advantage of export opportunities and attracting foreign investment.
  • At the most basic level, education nurtures in students an awareness of latent possibilities for their lives and of their ability to take advantage of opportunities that provide security for themselves and their families.
