Learning Village

Team from Florida Hospital Volunteers at the Learning Village

“I have waited a long time for this day…” said Tesfaye, a 40 year-old man who has been suffering with reoccurring toothache for years.  When he heard that a team of health professionals will come from America to provide free dental care at the Summit Clinic, Tesfaye was among the first 200 patients who lined-up at the gate early Sunday morning, October 17, 2010.

The team of 22 volunteers (doctors, dentists, opticians, nurses, dental technicians, and other support personnel) from Florida Hospital arrived at the Learning Village to serve the community by providing health education and healthcare–including dental care, eye care, OB/GYN and general medical treatment.

Hundreds of patients lined up at the clinic early in the morning during the six days that the volunteers were available.  The dental team and the optician, in particular, worked until late afternoons, sometimes without lunch break, to accommodate all the patients.

Amazingly, the team was able to compassionately serve twelve hundred grateful individuals from our community at the Learning Village!

Kalaala Chronicles: Putting Poverty Alleviation in Women's Hands, Taking Healthcare to the Community, & More
Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:54
In Ethiopia as in much of the developing world, women are among the most afflicted by poverty, and bear the brunt of the struggle to support a family. Given the opportunity to work for a living, women are granted the means to be able feed and care for their whole families, and send their children to school.  Through women, the quality of life for entire communities can improve.

In the March 2010 issue of the Kalaala Chronicles, read about our program to enrich the lives of the women in our community.

In the April 2010 issue, read about how health professionals at our clinic travel to nearby communities who have no easy access to our clinic or other healthcare facilities.  The nurses teach members of the community about health issues and hygiene, assess the needs of the community, and promote the new clinic.  Also read about the school's "Shibu Cup" Soccer tournament and Ethiopian Easter.

In the February issue, learn about Ethiopian traditions and customs in a cultural vignette.  Also read about Jennifer, Cameron & Anisha's trailblazing initiative to introduce Pathfinders--a youth fellowship group--to Ethiopia.

If you enjoy reading the Kalaala Chronicles, or have suggestions about what you would like to read more about, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  We love to hear feedback from our community of supporters.
